2026 Leadership Impact Award

Steven Katz, MD, FRCPC

Dr. Steven Katz is a nationally recognized rheumatologist, educator, and health-systems leader whose career has been defined by transformative contributions to rheumatology care, medical education, and patient advocacy across Canada. A Professor of Medicine at Queen’s University and Adjunct Professor at the University of Alberta, Dr. Katz has spent more than 15 years advancing innovative clinical models, digital tools, and provincial and national strategies that have reshaped how rheumatology services are delivered.

Widely regarded for his vision and collaborative leadership, Dr. Katz has helped lead the establishment of multiple pioneering initiatives—including AlbertaRheumatology.com, RheumDAS.com, and the Collaborative Rheumatologist-Pharmacist Inflammatory Arthritis Follow Up Clinic — each improving access, efficiency, and patient experience. He served as President of the Section of Rheumatology for the Alberta Medical Association for over a decade, and Director of the University of Alberta’s Division of Rheumatology, where he led major recruitment efforts, expanded research capacity, modernized triage systems, and led the development of a strategic plan shaping rheumatology care for the next decade.

A dedicated medical educator, Dr. Katz has held leadership roles in both internal medicine and rheumatology residency programs, including Program Director for Core Internal Medicine at the University of Alberta. He has been recognized with numerous teaching, mentorship, and professionalism awards.

Dr. Katz’s scholarly work includes over 40 peer-reviewed publications spanning access to care, health-system performance, medical education, digital health, and equity in rheumatology.
